E Ink display technology is famous as the e-paper used in devices such as kindle ereaders and shelf-edge displays, it is also uniquely suited to outdoor signage displays.
Available with screen sizes 42", 32" and 13.3" the main characteristics of these displays is that they are highly visible in sunlight and extremely low power so suitable for solar and battery power. The displays are reflective so they rely and benefit from ambient light. E Ink displays are also bistable which means they hold their image without power and only use power to change the image which together with partial screen writing capabilities reduces the power drain the minimum possible.
The combination of unique E Ink features together with suitable electronics and product design results in compelling outdoor signage solutions for a range of applications.

E Ink's e-paper technology uses normal printing pigments in a liquid that can be moved from the front to the back of microcapsules making up the display as illustrated below.
The reason E Ink's displays are so low power is twofold:
● They hold their image, referred to as bistable, so once the image is written to the display it remains there until an updated image is written. Added to this is is possible to just update the part of the image that needs changing rather than the whole image. Other display technologies such as LCD and LED typically have the image updated 60 times a second.
● They are reflective so like normal paper they rely on ambient light, this is one of the reasons they are so effective as sunlight readable displays. Other display technologies are emissive, ie light shines from them. LCD typically has an LED backlight and LED, which is often referred to as direct view LED, is in effect a lamp. OLED is like LED, the pixels themselves emit light.
